Sophie’s Journey: From Intern to Peer Mentor
In 2020, Sophie joined the Lily’s team through our KCC contract, referred by her social worker. She began her journey in our production kitchen, working behind the scenes with care and dedication. When our cafés reopened, Sophie transitioned to our Canterbury site, quickly becoming a much-loved part of the team.
From the very beginning, Sophie’s background and life experiences gave her a unique gift: empathy. She has always been the first to advocate for her peers, ensuring they feel supported and valued. Whether making sure the team stayed fed and hydrated during catering events or offering quiet encouragement to fellow trainees, Sophie became known as a constant ray of kindness and compassion.
Growing with the Internship Programme
Sophie was part of Lily’s first cohort of supported interns, bravely stepping into something new alongside us as we trialled and shaped the programme. Not only did she excel personally, but she also contributed valuable suggestions for improvement and consistently supported her peers.
As part of her internship, Sophie undertook a work placement at Stag Coffee in Canterbury. This experience helped her expand her skills while building confidence and independence. It was clear to everyone around her that Sophie was growing – not just in her abilities, but in her self-belief too.

Taking the Next Step
When Sophie finished her internship, she initially moved on from Lily’s despite being offered a role. However, just a few months later, she demonstrated her growing confidence and self-advocacy by returning to ask if the opportunity was still available. We were delighted to say yes.
Recognising her natural skills in supporting others, Sophie began an apprenticeship in health and social care. Her lived experience made her a strong role model for new trainees, and her presence continues to be a source of reassurance and inspiration for every cohort that follows.
A Word from Our CEO
“It has been such a delight to see how Sophie has grown and matured over the last five years. Her independence and how she sometimes surprises herself with her ability is deeply inspiring. Her kindness and compassion, and her constant focus on the needs of our beneficiaries, keep us all grounded in what truly matters. She is the reason we do what we do – thank you Sophie, for making my job such a joy.”

Sophie’s Voice
‘My journey has been fun. I’ve learnt how to do lots of new tasks and how to do things confidently.’
Looking Ahead
This September, Sophie will complete her apprenticeship – and we are proud to share that she has accepted a permanent role as a Peer Mentor, alongside continuing her work in the Canterbury café. She recently topped off her journey by co-hosting our yearly celebration event in front of more than 100 people – a shining example of her confidence, courage, and leadership.
Sophie’s journey is exactly what Lily’s is about: building confidence, pushing beyond comfort zones, and celebrating achievements together.
