Healing Hands, Compassionate Heart: Nathalie’s Journey of Caring for Others

A Conversation Rooted in Compassion

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Nathalie to talk about her work, her journey, and what drives her to support others in our community. From the moment she began speaking, it was clear that compassion sits at the heart of everything she does.

Nathalie is 49 and, as she modestly puts it, does “numerous jobs.” But what truly defines her is her dedication to helping people. She works as a therapist, offering massages, reflexology and treatment work through The Harmony Therapy Trust, providing free therapy treatments to patients going through cancer treatment. Hearing her speak about this work was incredibly moving. She explained how the charity was founded because there simply wasn’t enough emotional and physical support for people navigating cancer.

Her role is simple but powerful — to make people feel relaxed and special during an incredibly difficult time. She also offers treatments locally in Dymchurch at Tempt Beauty & Hair Salon.

Finding Purpose Through Life’s Turning Points

What struck me most was Nathalie’s humility. She told me she doesn’t feel she has had a “big career,” yet her story says otherwise.

She came to the UK at 24 without speaking any English and began working in transport and as a secretary for the council. After marriage, children and later divorce, it was a personal experience — going for a massage to feel better — that changed her path. In that moment, she decided she wanted to help women feel good about themselves and confident, and that’s when she chose to follow this career.

I found that incredibly inspiring — sometimes our hardest moments quietly redirect us towards our true purpose.

The Quiet Professionalism Behind Her Work

Nathalie shared how important routine and preparation are in her work. She likes to arrive an hour early so she can prepare the room properly, settle herself, and ensure everything is just right for her client.

After each session, she carefully cleans down and resets the space. She builds time into her day to stay calm and grounded because, as she explained, it’s vital that she is relaxed so her clients can relax too.

That level of care says everything about her professionalism.

The Power of Listening Without Judgement

Compassion is a word that came up again and again in our conversation. Nathalie believes in not judging, in listening, and in allowing people to offload their stories in a safe, calm space.

She told me she has learned not to try to fix problems, but instead to offer guidance and compassion. That really resonated with me — sometimes being heard is more powerful than being “fixed.”

Overcoming Challenges and Staying Grounded

Her journey hasn’t been without challenges. Moving to the UK without English was difficult, but her first landlady and her family helped her develop her speaking skills.

She spoke honestly about how challenges aren’t always at work — they can be at home too — and how important it is to strive to be the best version of yourself and learn to communicate effectively.

One of the hardest parts of her role is separating herself emotionally from patients going through cancer pathways. Yet despite this, she remains deeply loyal and committed to helping people through unfair and painful periods in their lives.

A Natural Desire to Help Others

When I asked about her dream job, she smiled and told me she once wanted to be like her dad, who was in the navy and did a lot for others.

Although she didn’t follow that path, she always knew she wanted to help people — she just didn’t know how she would achieve it. Listening to her now, it’s clear she’s doing exactly that.

More than anything, her focus is simply to be happy with who she is and what she does.

Shared Values in the Community

One part of our conversation that felt especially meaningful was when Nathalie spoke about how her work aligns with the community — much like Lily’s — helping people feel confident, relaxed and the best version of themselves.

That connection really stood out to me. At Lily’s Social Kitchen, we believe in creating safe, welcoming spaces where people can express how they feel and better understand those feelings — and Nathalie is doing that every day through her therapy work.

Finding Joy Outside of Work

And on a lighter note, I loved hearing about what brings her joy outside of work.

Nathalie loves to jive — dancing makes her smile the whole time. She did ballet until she was 15, and after moving to the UK, she returned to dancing several times.

It was lovely to see that spark of happiness when she talked about it.

A Quiet Kind of Success

Interviewing Nathalie reminded me that success isn’t always loud or flashy. Sometimes it’s found in quiet rooms, in gentle conversations, in healing hands, and in simply being there for someone when they need it most.
