Last week, I had the privilege of attending a fascinating conference on diversity in the construction industry at Canterbury Christ Church University. It was an eye-opening experience that reminded me how important inclusion and equal opportunity are in every field — and how much progress our industry can still make.

Conversations that Matter

The first session brought together a wide mix of people — from local and national construction firms to international companies. The discussions focused on how diversity strengthens the workplace, drives innovation, and builds stronger teams. Hearing leaders share real examples of how diverse hiring practices improved their projects and company culture was inspiring.

I was especially struck by how these conversations highlighted that diversity isn’t just a moral choice — it’s a business advantage. Companies that welcome people from all backgrounds bring new ideas, creativity, and problem-solving approaches that make their work stronger and more sustainable.

Exploring Canterbury Christ Church University

After the talks, I joined a tour of the university’s construction facilities. We explored workshops, classrooms, and studios — spaces where the next generation of construction professionals are learning their craft. It was exciting to see how education and hands-on learning come together in such a supportive environment. The visit made me think about how important it is to open these opportunities to everyone, regardless of background or circumstance.

Listening and Learning

In the second session, we heard personal stories from people working in construction — how they got their start, what challenges they faced, and how they’ve built successful careers. These conversations were honest and heartfelt, and I left feeling even more motivated to support diversity and inclusion in my own work.

Looking Ahead

Attending this conference reminded me that progress starts with conversations like these — and with people who are willing to listen, learn, and act. I’m grateful for the chance to take part, and I’d definitely attend again.

The construction industry has always been about building — not just structures, but communities and futures. Embracing diversity is how we make sure those futures are strong, fair, and open to everyone.

Looking Ahead: Sharing More Stories Together

This is just the start of my storytelling journey at Lily’s Social Kitchen. Over the next few months, I’ll be working with Zoe to interview more of our partners, funders, and community members, helping to share the stories of the people and organisations that make our mission possible.

If you’re one of our partners and would like to be featured, we’d love to hear from you!
Please get in touch with me (Stan) or Zoe to arrange an interview — and help us celebrate the incredible work being done across our community.
