Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Max, a Commercial Account Executive at Howden Insurance, to learn more about his role, career journey, and his thoughts on the industry. What followed was an inspiring conversation about career growth, community values, and the importance of adaptability

Max’s Role at Howden Insurance

Max’s main job at Howden revolves around building and maintaining strong client relationships. As a Commercial Account Executive, his responsibilities include bringing in new business, managing client accounts, and ensuring organisations have the right insurance cover to suit their needs. His day-to-day work involves a mix of networking , Insurance reviews , claims handling , market presentations and analysis , all focused on helping clients find the best cover at the best price.

What stood out most was Max’s dedication to service throughout the year — not just when clients sign up, but ensuring they remain properly covered and supported as their needs evolve.

From Criminology to Commercial Insurance

Max’s career journey has been far from linear. His first job was at a Masonic Lodge when he was just 14 or 15 years old, gaining early work experience in the kitchens , followed by some time working in restaurants and building sites laying flooring.   Later, he studied Criminology at the University of Canterbury, aspiring to become a detective. However, life took him in a different direction.

After university, Max’s friends started a Digital marketing company which he was heavily involved in , but when that closed, he found himself working in recruitment — and it was there that he discovered his passion for sales and working with people. This experience eventually led him into the world of insurance, where his consultancy-style approach allows him to offer clients comprehensive advice and find them the best deals.

It’s a journey that reminds us how careers often evolve in unexpected ways. As Max reflected, “Many people start with one idea of what they want to do, but end up finding something completely different that suits them even better.”

Values That Align with the Community

One thing Max appreciates about Howden is how well the company’s values align with those of Lily’s Community. Howden has a strong focus on local impact, with branches that truly understand and support their communities. That shared sense of care and connection is what makes the partnership between Lily’s and Howden so meaningful.

When asked about what advice he’d give to someone wanting to join his field, Max emphasised that building skills and communication is key, especially in an industry that changes so quickly. Staying adaptable and connected to people makes all the difference.

Inclusivity and Neurodiversity in the Workplace

Max also shared some thoughtful insights into Howden’s approach to inclusion and neurodiversity. In their London offices, the fast-paced environment can initially feel overwhelming, but the company takes steps to ensure everyone feels supported. Howden adjusts working styles to suit individual needs and encourages open conversations about how best to help neurodivergent employees thrive.

“They make space for people to share ideas and suggest how support can be improved,” Max explained — a reflection of Howden’s commitment to fostering understanding and collaboration across the team.

A Few Fun Facts

When asked for an interesting fact about Howden, Max told me that Howden was one of the first insurers to cover cargo ships coming into the UK — a fascinating nod to the company’s long history in the insurance world.

As for Max himself, he keeps active outside of work through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai — activities that reflect the same discipline and focus he brings to his professional life.

A Partnership Built on Care

Here at Lily’s, we’re proud to partner with Howden Insurance. Not only did they provide excellent, affordable cover for our organisation, but they also showed genuine care when we needed it most. When we experienced a flood earlier this year, the Howden team personally checked in to make sure we were okay and to help with any potential claims.

We’re looking forward to partnering with them again for the Christmas Light Switch-On, and we’re grateful for the ongoing relationship built on community spirit and mutual respect.
